WWIII Notes - Weds, Oct 17, 2018

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for everyone who joined us. Here are the notes from the meeting:

   -

Deadline is October 17th (today) for the public release for new features.
   -

Please have all documentation updates ready by November 1st. You can
add your documentation updates to your own branch or put them in the
   docedit branch.
   -

If you have a branch ready for reintegration to the master, please email
the code-managers your branch name after you have looked over the
   checklist
   <https://vlab.ncep.noaa.gov/redmine/projects/emc-ww3/wiki/Checklist_for_submitting_to_master>.

   -

The list of branches waiting to be reintegrated to the master is on the wiki
   page
   <https://vlab.ncep.noaa.gov/redmine/projects/emc-ww3/wiki#Upcoming-commits>
   .

We will send out an email when we have created the “public release” branch. (It
will take a few days to get all the branches that have been submitted into
the master, the hope is Friday or Monday). From this branch NCEP will start
running the tests listed here
<https://vlab.ncep.noaa.gov/redmine/projects/emc-ww3/wiki/Checklist_for_Public_Release#The-list-of-tests-that-will-be-run-for-the-public-release-are>.
We encourage everyone to do tests on their own tests as well. The more
we have testing and solving bugs the faster this process will go. To
contribute updates to the public release branch, you will put them in a
“bugfix_description” branch, which will then go back into both the public
release branch and the master. New features are allowed in the master, they
just won't be accepted for the public release.

Other discussion topics:

   -

There seems to be a significant slow down between version 5.16 and the
current master. Any more data points for this will be helpful. Roberto
found this issue when testing the Great Lakes (unstructured grid,
card-deck parallelization) and Henrique confirmed he also saw this issue in
   the multi_1 system.
   -

There is an issue that three ICE related variables are undefined for
   unified output (issue #56247
   <https://vlab.ncep.noaa.gov/redmine/issues/56247>) which I’m hoping to
hear something back from Mickael and Fabrice about. It’s one a few
remaining issues to get all regtests bit reproducible. (issue #56247
   <https://vlab.ncep.noaa.gov/redmine/issues/56247>)
   -

The plan is to use c instead of an _ to distinguish between a partition
number and the variable name. So PHSc0 or TM01c1 (issue #55541
   <https://vlab.ncep.noaa.gov/redmine/issues/55541>)
   -

Tim, Jessica and Andre will coordinate the NUOPC cap documentation
   -

Mickael asked for a regression test for esmf. There is a test in
regtest/bin/run_esmf_test_suite but to have something that would have
   coupled input is not there.
   -

We still need to address the NL4 bug issue: Issue #/39745
   <https://vlab.ncep.noaa.gov/redmine/issues/39745>

As always, please let Ali or I know if you have any questions. The next
regularly scheduled third Wednesday is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving in
the US so we might reschedule that. I’ll send out an announcement either
way.

Best,

Jessica
