The weekly PowerPoint presentations summarizing the recent variability of
the global monsoon systems have been updated on the CPC Global Monsoons
website:
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Global_Monsoons/Global-Monsoon.shtml

*HIGHLIGHTS:*

*African Monsoons:*

Weekly rainfall totals exceeded 100mm over parts of northern Madagascar.

Week-1 outlooks call for an increased chance for above-average rainfall
over eastern Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire, southern Ghana, parts of southern Togo
and southern Benin, parts of eastern Zambia and southern Tanzania, much of
Malawi and northern Mozambique. In contrast, there is an increased chance
for below-average rainfall over eastern Angola, northeastern Namibia,
northern Botswana, western Zambia, western Zimbabwe, parts of eastern and
southern Ethiopia and much of Kenya.

*Asian-Australian Monsoons:*

For the past 90 days, below normal rainfall deficits dominated deep
coastal southern peninsular India, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines,
large parts of New Guinea island of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, and
almost all of Australia, particularly north western regions. Elsewhere, the
rainfall amounts received were at normal to slightly above normal levels,
particularly in southeastern China, Kashmir India, parts of the Middle
East, and Indonesia. For the past 30 days, seasonal rainfall fell over
Kashmir, Nepal, and across the Middle East in general. Large rainfall fell
over southeast China. But large parts of Australia continue to be
abnormally dry, especially in the north.

In this past week, much of the region received below normal rainfall except
parts of the Papua New Guinea and eastern coastal Australia. In the
upcoming two weeks, the NCEP GFS model forecasts below normal across much
of southeast Asia in the first week, but slight to above normal rainfall
over northern parts of Australia during both weeks, a much needed relief in
this region.

*South American Monsoons:*

Long-term rainfall deficits are present over the Amazon Basin and the
Brazilian Plateau.

During the last 7 days, below-average precipitation was observed over much
of northern and central Brazil, as well as portions of northern Argentina,
northern Bolivia and western Colombia. Above-average precipitation was
observed over portions of southern Brazil, northern Argentina, Paraguay,
northern Peru and central Colombia.

For Days 1-7 (18 - 24 Mar 2019), below-average precipitation is predicted
for portions of northern and central Brazil, southern Bolivia, northeastern
Argentina, Uruguay, southern Chile and southern Peru. Above-average
precipitation is predicted for portions of Paraguay, southern Brazil,
Ecuador and southern Colombia.
