The weekly PowerPoint presentations summarizing the recent variability of
the global monsoon systems have been updated on the CPC Global Monsoons
website:
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Global_Monsoons/Global-Monsoon.shtml

*HIGHLIGHTS:*

*African Monsoons:*

Weekly rainfall surpluses exceeded 100mm over local areas in Kenya and
southern Somalia, western and eastern Tanzania, and eastern Zambia.

Week-1 outlooks call for an increased chance for below-average rainfall
over much of Sierra Leone, eastern Guinea-Conakry, western Liberia,
southern CAR, central and northern DRC, and western South Sudan. In
contrast, there is an increased chance for above-average rainfall over
Rwanda, Burundi, southern and eastern Uganda, much of Tanzania and Kenya,
and portions of Ethiopia and Somalia.

*Asian-Australian Monsoons:*

For the past 90 days, below normal rainfall deficits remain over
southeastern China, over large parts of Australia (except along come
northern coastal regions), Papua New Guinea, as well as over the Middle
East. Elsewhere, in general, the rainfall amounts received were at normal
to slightly above normal levels. For the past 30 days, the notable
features are the lower rainfall amounts over northwestern Australia and
over New Guinea island, and also over coastal south eastern China.

In this past week, the rainfall amounts received over the entire region in
general has been below normal, particularly over large parts of the
maritime Indonesia, and southeastern China. Some above normal rainfall over
northern parts of eastern China south of 40N are also noted. In the
upcoming two weeks, the NCEP GFS model is predicting below normal rainfall
over northern Australia, Papua New Guinea and southeastern China, while
normal to slightly above normal rainfall is forecast elsewhere.

*South American Monsoons:*

Long-term rainfall deficits are present over the Amazon Basin and the
Brazilian Plateau.

During the last 7 days, below-average precipitation was observed over
portions of northern and the extreme southern Brazil, Paraguay and
northeastern Argentina. Above-average precipitation was observed over
portions of northeastern and central Brazil, northern Argentina, southern
Chile, northern Peru and western Colombia.

For Days 1-7 (16 - 22 April 2018), below-average precipitation is predicted
over much of central and the extreme southern Brazil, northeastern
Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, southern Bolivia, central and southern Peru,
as well as western Ecuador. Above-average precipitation is predicted for
portions of northern South America and southern Chile.
