1. You can check this link for the code to create cyclone.track files for the current GEFS production version : http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/codes/nwprod/util/sorc/gettrk.fd/ 

and the script to call this is located at : http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/codes/nwprod/util/ush/ extrkr.sh 

The model to be processed is selected by exporting "cmodel" before calling the script. In this version of extrkr.sh: 

export cmodel=gfs 180-hour tracks from the GFS 
export cmodel=gfs00 00-hour tracks from the GFS, used for 

GEFS tropical cyclone relocation 
export cmodel=ens 240-hour tracks from the GEFS (generates files ap01*atcfunix etc.) 
export cmodel=gfs_enr 6-hour tracks from the GEFS, used for 

GEFS tropical cyclone relocation 
(generates files wp01*x, xp01*x, yp01*x, zp01*x etc., the first letter depends on $cyc_fcst) 

This version uses 1.0 degree files from the GEFS and master post files from the GFS (probably interpolated to 0.5 degrees). Some of the settings in the $cmodel case statement for the cases you want to run will have to be modified to point to your input and output locations and to specify the track file names you want to use. 

2. As GFS tracks are made using 0.5 degree files but GEFS tracks use 1.0 degree files, the GFS locations may be a little more precise. The underlying model resolution probably makes more difference than the use of 1.0 degree instead of 0.5 degree grids.

As you have requested for GEFS initial conditions, they are uploaded at the following ftp site :

In order to run the GEFS initialization jobs you also need gfs.t??z.sanl, gfs.t??z.sfcanl, gfs.t??z.syndata.tcvitals.tm00 , and avn.t??z.cyclone.trackatcfunix files from your current GFS cycle, and also the sfcsig/*sf06* and track files from the previous GEFS cycle. Our GEFS team lead Dr. Yuejian is also cc'd in this email, if you have questions you can ask him as well. 

Let us know, whether you can access those files at ftp. As the ftp space is limited, please email monsoondesk after you successfully download the initial condition files. We can then send 10th June, 2014 output files for comparison. Thanks.

Operational GEFS source code can be accessed with the following ftp site :

Total file sizes are little over 1 GB. Let us know, if you have any problem accessing the files, then we will figure out some other ways to send those files. Further information about GEFS model can be found here :
