The weekly PowerPoint presentations summarizing the recent variability of
the global monsoon systems (SAMS.ppt, AFMS.ppt and AAMS.ppt) have been
updated on the CPC Global Monsoons website:
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Global_Monsoons/Global-Monsoon.shtml

*HIGHLIGHTS:*

*African Monsoons (AFMS.ppt):*

Another week of suppressed rainfall sustained moisture deficits over much
of DRC and the neighboring areas.

Rainfall was above-average over southeastern Angola, northeastern Namibia,
western Zambia, portions of Zimbabwe and Mozambique, and northern
Madagascar.

Week-1 outlooks call for an increased chance for above-average rainfall
over southeastern Angola, northeastern Namibia, northern Botswana, and
portions of Zambia. In contrast, there is an increased chance for
below-average rainfall, over portions of Angola, DRC, portions of
Mozambique and Madagascar.

*Asian-Australian Monsoons (AAMS.ppt):*

During the past 90 days, rainfall has been generally above normal across
central India, Burma, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and northern
Australia, but below normal especially over peninsular southern India,
parts of eastern China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and interior central and
eastern Australia. The 30-day anomalous rainfall pattern shows relatively
good improvement from the 90-day picture with either near or above normal
over the entire region especially over southeastern China. However rainfall
deficits still remain over eastern Australia, Papa New Guinea and Japan.

This past week rainfall is above normal over southern China, much below
normal over Sumatra and northern Australia and relatively near normal
elsewhere in the region. For the next two weeks NCEP GFS model continues to
predict below normal rainfall over southern India and northern Australia.

*South American Monsoons (SAMS.ppt):*

Recent heavy rains have reduced long-term precipitation deficits over the
core monsoon region.

During the last 7 days (16-22 Dec 2013), below-average precipitation was
observed over southern Brazil, southern Paraguay, Uruguay and eastern
Argentina. Above-average precipitation was observed over portions of
Bolivia, and central and northeastern Brazil.

For 23-29 December, below-average rainfall is predicted for southern
Venezuela, southern Colombia, Bolivia, northern Argentina, Uruguay and
extreme southern Brazil. Above-average rainfall is predicted for portions
of Southeast Brazil.
