The weekly PowerPoint presentations summarizing the recent variability of
the global monsoon systems have been updated on the CPC Global Monsoons
website:
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Global_Monsoons/Global-Monsoon.shtml

*HIGHLIGHTS:*

*African Monsoons:*

Weekly rainfall surpluses exceeded 100mm over northeastern Madagascar, due
to tropical cyclone Eliakim.

Another week of moderate to heavy rainfall sustained moisture surpluses
over many places in East Africa.

Week-1 outlooks call for an increased chance for above-average rainfall
over parts of Ghana, Togo, Benin, southern Nigeria, southwestern Cameroon,
Angola, northeastern Namibia, western Zambia, Botswana and parts of South
Africa. In contrast, there is an increased chance for below-average
rainfall over southeastern Zambia, southern Malawi, eastern Zimbabwe, and
portions of Mozambique.

*Asian-Australian Monsoons:*

For the past 90 days, below normal rainfall deficits remain over northern
and central Australia, Papua New Guinea, as well as over the Middle East
and parts of east central India. Elsewhere, in general, the rainfall
amounts received were at normal to above normal levels. For the past 30
days, the notable features are the lower rainfall amounts over
northwestern Australia and over New Guinea island, especially over Papua
New Guinea and also over coastal south eastern China.

In this past week, the main rainfall feature is the below normal amounts
received over all across northern Australia and northern Sumatra.
Elsewhere, east central China and far southern India got well needed rain.
In the upcoming two weeks, the NCEP GFS model is predicting below normal
rainfall over southeastern China, Papua New Guinea, and coastal northwestern
Australia. But slightly above normal rainfall is forecast over coastal
northeastern Australia.

*South American Monsoons:*

Long-term rainfall deficits are present over the Amazon Basin and the
Brazilian Plateau.

During the last 7 days, below-average precipitation was observed over much
of northern and southern Brazil, Paraguay, northern Argentina, southern
Bolivia, Ecuador and central Colombia. Above-average precipitation was
observed over portions of central and the extreme southern Brazil, southern
Chile and northern Peru.

For Days 1-7 (19 - 25 Mar 2018), below-average precipitation is predicted
over portions of northern and southern Brazil, northern Argentina and
southern Bolivia. Above-average precipitation is predicted for portions of
central and the extreme southern Brazil, Uruguay and Peru.
