The weekly PowerPoint presentations summarizing the recent variability of
the global monsoon systems have been updated on the CPC Global Monsoons
website:
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Global_Monsoons/Global-Monsoon.shtml

*HIGHLIGHTS:*

*African Monsoons:*

Rainfall was above-average over portions of East Africa, and northern
Madagascar. Above-average rainfall was also observed along Gulf of Guinea
coast, and portions of Southern Africa.

Week-1 outlooks call for an increased chance for above-average rainfall
over much Guinea-Conakry, Sierra Leone, Liberia western Cote d'Ivoire,
parts of Angola, southern DRC, northwestern Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda,
Burundi, Tanzania, portions of Kenya and southern Ethiopia. In contrast,
there is an increased chance for below-average rainfall over Equatorial
Guinea, Gabon, Congo-Brazzaville, DRC, and parts of Cameroon and Central
African Republic.

*Asian-Australian Monsoons:*

For the past 90 days, rainfall deficits were noted over Afghanistan, along
the east coast of India bordering the Bay of Bengal, Papua New Guinea, and
over the eastern two thirds of Australia especially in the northern parts
therein. Elsewhere small broken pockets of below normal precip regions
remain. However, over Indonesia, the Philippine islands, Malaysia, and over
the south China Sea region countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and
Thailand, and over northwestern Australia, the precipitation is at near
normal to above normal levels. For the past 30 days, rainfall amounts
received across the region was a mixed pattern, with below normal values
over southeastern China, Papua New Guinea and northern Australia

In this past week, rainfall anomalies over the region were generally weak,
with especially below normal rainfall amounts over northwestern Australia.
In the upcoming two weeks, the NCEP GFS model is predicting slightly above
normal rainfall over southern tip of India, and sporadically across parts
of southeastern China. Elsewhere across northern Australia, less rainfall
in the first week but more rainfall in the second week is also forecast.

*South American Monsoons:*

Long-term rainfall deficits are present over the Amazon Basin and the
Brazilian Plateau.

During the last 7 days, below-average precipitation was observed over much
of northern and the extreme southern Brazil, Uruguay, eastern Argentina,
southern Bolivia, Ecuador and western Colombia. Above-average precipitation
was observed over portions of central Brazil, Paraguay, southern Peru and
eastern Colombia.

For Days 1-7 (12 - 18 Mar 2018), below-average precipitation is predicted
over much of northern and southern Brazil, central Argentina, eastern
Bolivia, northern Peru and Ecuador. Above-average precipitation is
predicted for portions of central and the extreme southern Brazil, Uruguay
and southern Chile.
