The weekly PowerPoint presentations summarizing the recent variability of
the global monsoon systems have been updated on the CPC Global Monsoons
website:
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Global_Monsoons/Global-Monsoon.shtml

*HIGHLIGHTS:*

*African Monsoons:*

Moderate to locally heavy rainfall sustained moisture surpluses over parts
of South Sudan, western Ethiopia and western Kenya. Rainfall was also
above-average over much of Guinea-Conakry and Sierra Leone.

Week-1 outlooks call for an increased chance for above-average rainfall
over much of Guinea-Conakry, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Eritrea, western and
central Ethiopia, eastern Uganda and western Kenya. In contrast, there is
an increased chance for below-average rainfall over southern CAR,
southeastern Cameroon, northern Congo-Brazzaville, and northern DRC.

*Asian-Australian Monsoons:*

For the past 90 days, below normal rainfall deficits remain over
southeastern China, over almost all of Australia, New Guinea, parts of
Malaysia, as well as over Afghanistan. Elsewhere, in general, the rainfall
amounts received were at normal to slightly above normal levels. For the
past 30 days, over all of southeast and south Asia, the rainfall pattern is
quite mixed.

In this past week, there is a strong dry-wet dipole precipitation pattern
over southeast China, a dry Malaysia-Indonesia rainfall pattern. The India
Met Dept. (IMD) announced that the 2018 summer monsoon officially onset
early over Kerala this year on May 28th. In the upcoming two weeks, the
NCEP GFS model forecast is predicting generally low rainfall amounts except
over northeast India, Burma and parts of lower southeast China.

*North American Monsoons:*

Below-average rainfall has been observed over portions of southern and
eastern Mexico during the past week.

Rainfall accumulations over the past 30 days were below-average for much of
eastern and southern Mexico.

NCEP/GFS Forecasts call for above-average precipitation for portions of
central and southern Mexico during the next week.
