The weekly PowerPoint presentations summarizing the recent variability of
the global monsoon systems have been updated on the CPC Global Monsoons
website:
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Global_Monsoons/Global-Monsoon.shtml

*HIGHLIGHTS:*

*African Monsoons:*

Weekly total rainfall exceeded 100mm over parts of southern Cote d’Ivoire
and southern Nigeria. Moderate to locally heavy rainfall also sustained
moisture surpluses over parts of South Sudan Republic and southern Sudan.

Week-1 outlooks call for an increased chance for below-average rainfall
over portions of Ghana, Togo, Benin, southwestern Nigeria,
Congo-Brazzaville, northern DRC, and parts of CAR. In contrast, there is an
increased chance for above-average rainfall over southern South Sudan
Republic, portions of Ethiopia and Uganda, and western Kenya.

*Asian-Australian Monsoons:*

For the past 90 days, below normal rainfall deficits remain over
southeastern China, over almost all of Australia, New Guinea, parts of
Malaysia, as well as over Afghanistan. Elsewhere, in general, the rainfall
amounts received were at normal to slightly above normal levels. For the
past 30 days, the notable features are the relatively lower rainfall
amounts over coastal south eastern China, and over New Guinea maritime
island, and above normal amounts over Bangladesh. Elsewhere, the pattern is
mixed.

In this past week, almost no new rain fell over Australia, as the monsoon
has totally lifted out of the southern hemisphere, and is beginning to get
established and settled over southeast Asia and in far southern India.
The Southwest
summer monsoon season (JJAS) over India has just started over India. The
India Met Dept (IMD) announced that the 2018 summer monsoon officially
onset early over Kerala this year on May 28th. In the upcoming two weeks,
the NCEP GFS model forecast is suggesting more rainfall than normal over
the Western Ghats and the southeast Asian countries and less rainfall
elsewhere, especially southeastern China, southeast India and Indonesia.

*North American Monsoons:*

Below-average rainfall has been observed over much of southern and eastern
Mexico during the past week.

Rainfall accumulations over the past 30 days were below-average for eastern
Mexico and portions of southern Mexico.

NCEP/GFS Forecasts call for below-average precipitation for central Mexico
during the next week.
