The weekly PowerPoint presentations summarizing the recent variability of
the global monsoon systems have been updated on the CPC Global Monsoons
website:
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Global_Monsoons/Global-Monsoon.shtml

*HIGHLIGHTS:*

*African Monsoons:*

Above-average rainfall was observed over anomalously dry areas of Zimbabwe,
southwestern Zambia, northern Botswana and central Mozambique.

Week-1 outlooks call for an increased chance for below-average rainfall
over parts of western DRC, northern and western Angola, northwestern
Namibia, parts of southern Zimbabwe, southern Mozambique, northern South
Africa, and Swaziland. In contrast, there is an increased chance for
above-average rainfall over the Caprivi Strip region, portions of northern
Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, northern Zimbabwe, Mozambique and southern
Tanzania.

*Asian-Australian Monsoons:*

For the past 90 days, below normal rainfall deficits remain in general over
many parts of the Middle East, much of central and southern India, South
Korea, Japan, Papua New Guinea, and large parts of north central and north
eastern Australia. Elsewhere across southeast Asia, and over western
Australia, and southeastern China, the monsoon rainfall is at normal to
above normal levels. For the past 30 days, rainfall amounts were generally
at near or slightly above normal levels across the region, except over
Papua New Guinea, southern Sumatra island, and northern and northeastern
Australia where the rainfall deficits are severe.

In this past week, rainfall over the region was below normal over New
Guinea Island, northern Australia, and over large parts of Indonesian
Archipelago. Western Australia however received above normal rainfall
this past week. In the upcoming two weeks, the NCEP GFS model predicts
noticeably less rainfall than normal over northeastern Australia, where it
has been dry so far this monsoon region.

*South American Monsoons:*

Long-term rainfall deficits are present over the Amazon Basin and the
Brazilian Plateau.

During the last 7 days, below-average precipitation was observed over much
of northwestern and southern Brazil, Uruguay, eastern Argentina and eastern
Peru. Above-average precipitation was observed over portions of central
and northern Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia.

For Days 1-7 (05 -11 Feb 2018), below-average precipitation is predicted
over much of western and southern Brazil, northern Argentina and eastern
Peru. Above-average precipitation is predicted for eastern Brazil, Bolivia
and central Peru.
