The weekly PowerPoint presentations summarizing the recent variability of
the global monsoon systems have been updated on the CPC Global Monsoons
website:
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Global_Monsoons/Global-Monsoon.shtml

*HIGHLIGHTS:*

*African Monsoons:*

Above-average rainfall was observed over much of Burkina Faso, Cote
d’Ivoire, Ghana, and much of South Sudan Republic, Ethiopia and southern
Sudan.

Week-1 outlooks call for an increased chance for above-average rainfall
over portions of Guinea, Sierra Leone, parts of Liberia, southern Mali,
Burkina Faso, northern Cot d’Ivoire, northern Benin, western Nigeria, and
western Ethiopia. In contrast, there is an increased chance for
below-average rainfall over southern Sudan, parts of South Sudan Republic
and central DRC.

*Asian-Australian Monsoons:*

For the past 90 days, below normal rainfall deficits remain in general over
parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, South Korea, Japan, Papa New Guinea, and
large parts of Australia. During same period, rainfall excess is noted over
northeastern India, Bangladesh, and many southeast Asian countries. For the
past 30 days near normal rainfall situation is noted over India and
Australia, where (in Australia) where the longer term rainfall deficits
remain. Deficits also remain over eastern China, south Korea, and Japan.

In this past week, the observed rainfall amounts have generally been well
below normal over eastern China, Koreas, and Japan. The India Met. Dept.
has announced the southwest summer monsoon of 2017 is expected to onset
along southwest Indian coast of Kerala state on May 30th (plus/minus 4
days). For the whole 2017 monsoon season, the SASCOF (South Asian Climate
Outlook Forum) has forecast that the monsoon will be near normal for south
Asia including India. In the next couple of weeks the NCEP GFS model is
predicting below normal rainfall for northeast India, southeastern China,
Cambodia, and the Philippines.

*South American Monsoons:*

There will be no update this week.
