The weekly PowerPoint presentations summarizing the recent variability of
the global monsoon systems have been updated on the CPC Global Monsoons
website:
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Global_Monsoons/Global-Monsoon.shtml

*HIGHLIGHTS:*

*African Monsoons (AFMS.ppt):*

No available this week.

*Asian-Australian Monsoons (AAMS.ppt):*

For the past 90 days rainfall amounts have generally been at or below
normal over many parts of India, across the southern and east Asia monsoon
region, particularly over Indonesia, Papa New Guinea, Malaysia, Laos,
Vietnam, and Thailand consistent with the ongoing strong El Nino
conditions. Australia is also relatively dry. However, parts of
southeastern India, Sri Lanka, and large parts of southeastern China have
received above normal rainfall amounts. For the past 30 days over parts of
southeastern China and Indonesia rainfall is above normal. Elsewhere
rainfall is in general at or below normal levels, especially for much below
normal rainfall over northern Australia.

In this past week, rainfall over the entire region was generally at or
slightly below normal levels, except over southeastern China, where it was
above normal. Northern Australia and the island of New Guinea received
much below rainfall. Parts of Indonesia and southwestern Australia received
slightly above normal rainfall. In the next couple of weeks, the NCEP GFS
model is again predicting above normal rainfall over southeastern China and
southern Australia in the first week and below normal elsewhere
particularly over northern Australia.

*South American Monsoons (SAMS.ppt):*

Recent rains reduced long-term deficits over most of Central Brazil.

During the last 7 days (18-24 January 2016), , below-average precipitation
was observed over most of the Amazon Basin, southern Brazil, Bolivia,
Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina. Above-average precipitation was
observed over Central and Northeast Brazil.

For 25-31 January 2016, above-average rainfall is predicted for portions of
Central and Northeast Brazil, and portions of Paraguay, southern Brazil and
northern Argentina. Below-average precipitation is predicted for portions
of northern South America.
