Comment (by fanglin.yang@…):
Cycled experiments with DA were carried out using the newest FV3 branch
tic26 and the newest workflow tic21. Write Component was turned off,
therefore FMS was still used for the I/O. The first gdas/fcst and
enkf/efcs forecasts all appeared to be fine; however, the 2nd cycle
enkf/efcs forecast failed with out of range temperature error. Rerun the
same case using the FV3 trunk version does not have this problem.
Experiments carried out on Cray and Theia both showed the same symptom.
It was found that in FV3 tic26 branch output of hgtsfc is defined as
height in meters. While in earlier FV3 versions it is defined as
geopotential height in gpm. The post-processing tools regrid_nemsio.fd
and fv3nc2nemsio.fd both expect hgtsfc in the 6-tile netCDF history files
being in gpm. hgtsfc is scaled by 1/grav in these two programs before
being written out in nemsio files on either gaussian or lat-lon grid.
To use FV3 tic26 branch, regrid_nemsio.fd and fv3nc2nemsio.fd in workflow
branch tic21 have been updated to remove the scaling by 1/grav.
Tests are underway.
