HSU Shift Log for Mon Aug 07 2017 05:55:40 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Shift: A

Forecaster: E Blake

Technical Issues Summary:

ATCF issues: None.

N-AWIPS issues: Buoy 42056 is mislabeled near 42057 just south of Cozumel.
This might be an external issue.

AWIPS-2/NCP issues: Really need AWIPS2 to go through the satellite loops
faster. With the 1-min meso data, the clouds don't really move enough even
holding the arrow down. Needs to go as fast as holding down the plus sign
in NAWIPS.

Other Techincal issues: Requested GOES16 meso sector over Franklin from
07/09Z-08/03Z. It should be good until at least the late morning US
convective period.

Miscellaneous issues: The advanced nighttime RGB from GOES16 in AWIPS2 was
VERY helpful in noting the low-level center of Franklin by watching the low
clouds. However, there was a stark difference noted between the 15 and 5
minute GOES16 channels. An inflow notch and low clouds moving northward
toward the center could be easily seen in the 5-minute data, but these
features were much harder to see and track with even 15-minute resolution.
This high resolution GOES16 imagery potentially can reduce our initial
position error at night -- quite a valuable resource! One can see zero of
any of these features with GOES13 night viz, especially when cirrus is
present.
