Here is today's summary of NHC computer operations:
--- Craig

1. Radar imagery cannot be displayed in N-AWIPS, not available in menus.
TSB will investigate.

2. The Cumulus workstation at the surface analyst's desk became unstable
after a security patch and reboot (which loaded the wrong NVIDIA video
driver) on Friday. The SDM was called and NCO corrected the problem with
the video driver, but problems (CPU usage spiking, slowdown, system time
freezing) persist. TAFB forecasters are advised to use the new Crappie
workstation or Sheephead as backups until Cumulus can be stabilized by NCO.

Other items:
1. A network outage began at about 9:50 am EDT this morning. Connections to
College Park, MD remained open but there was no access to other computers
outside of NHC. Network connections were restored later this morning. TSB
was not warned of this potential network outage and is trying to learn what
caused it.
1. RFC #227 - Begin converting GFS files from grib to GEMPAK locally to
improve latency. An entry will be added to the 'parsing.tbl' to call the
conversion script after the grib files are downloaded. Also, the download
for the 0.5 degree GEMPAK files will be commented out. To be implemented on
Monday, April 17 at 1200Z (8 am EDT).

2. RFC #228 - Update/cleanup '$HOME/.fvwm/.fvwm2rc' menu entries for HSU
and TAFB operational users (atlantic, pacific, atlmar, pacmar, surface,
opcbkup). The legacy '.fvwm2rc' config files contain broken/obsolete menu
entries, and in some cases are missing backup entries needed by the
forecast desks. To be implemented on Tuesday, April 18 at 1500Z (11 am EDT).

3. RFC #3187- P-Surge probabilistic storm surge prediction model v2.6.2 -
2017 P-Surge upgrade includes:

1) allow NHC to make internal-use P-Surge runs,
2) update the South Florida area, and
3) produce 102- (vs 78-) hour forecasts.

P-Surge will also begin running on WCOSS/Cray (Surge or Luna). See the
Service Change Notice (SCN) at:

To be implemented on Tuesday, April 18 at 1400Z (10 am EDT).
