Here is today's summary of NHC computer operations:
--- Craig Mattocks
1. Double/triple plotting on N-AWIPS sawfish system. Sr. Hurricane
Specialist Stacy Stewart had to hard-reboot sawfish after the system locked
up and the cursor became unresponsive. After rebooting, the data for
several buoys and the ABC islands were plotting 2-3 times in the display,
making it difficult to read. TAFB forecasters have noticed this
double/triple plotting problem for the past month on several N-AWIPS
Sr. Hurricane Specialist Mike Brennan took a look at the raw data in the
GEMPAK ship file for the buoys and discovered multiple records for the same
time. Mike and TSB N-AWIPS expert Matt Sardi are investigating whether a
change in observation frequency, repeated transmission of data (with values
updated), or the data being classified as multiple types (eg, SHIPS + CMAN)
could cause this issue.
Forecasters are advised to consult the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC)
to verify the correctness of the data.
2. Thanks to Sr. Hurricane Specialist Richard Pasch, who submitted a run
and a rerun of a test storm (EP862016) within an hour from the ATCF
yesterday to test the new version (1.1.2) of the recently upgraded NHC
guidance suite. The IR data processed properly and the other models ran
correctly. The UKMet code could not be tested because the UKMet office does
not submit bulletins for invest storms. Earlier tests with TS Bonnie worked
3. Update on Sr. Hurricane Specialist Mike Brennan's desktop workstation
(pinfish), which has now become completely unresponsive. NCO was consulted
this morning and has advised that the an "Input/output error" on the Linux
terminal command line usually means that the hard disk is failing. NCO
SysAdmin Brian Maher and TSB Developer Matt Sardi are investigating.
