A summary of NHC computer operations.
1. Scientists in NCEP/EMC’s wave modeling group have advised us that the 2-4 foot high bias in our NWPS wave forecasts over the Pacific domain is most likely due to a deficiency in the swell dissipation formulation in the SWAN nearshore wave model, which was not designed to run over large, deepwater domains. There has been a recent upgrade to the WaveWatch III (ww3) model’s physics package that simulates this process with much higher fidelity. This provides more impetus to eventually transition the NWPS wave model from SWAN to ww3 for TAFB forecast operations.
