Here is today's summary of NHC computer operations:
--- Craig Mattocks

----------

TAFB:
1. The Wind Speed Probabilities (WSP) for 06Z Friday, August 5th did not
arrive in AWIPS. TAFB forecasters contacted the SDM (Randy) and explained
what the tropical WSPs are, where they run, at what time, and how critical
they are for warning products NWS-wide. Randy did not know the name of the
job, but could see a list of jobs that failed indicated on his monitor.
TAFB forecasters then called the NCF who explained that this was a gateway
issue, a national problem, impacting data coming across the satellite
broadcast network (SBN).

2. The black Dell LP1-NHCN printer in the TAFB ops area (to the left of the
surface analysis desk) will not print. The error reads "Cartridge error
091-923, Insert Magenta Drum Cartridge". TAFB forecasters attempted to
remove, shake, and reinsert the magenta cartridge (which usually remedies
the problem), as well as power the printer down and up, to no effect. An
NCO Help Desk ticket has been submitted.
HSU:
1. The Morehead City, Wilmington, and Charleston WFOs could not hear WPC on
the medium-range call on Sunday, but they could hear NHC just fine. A
trouble ticket was opened with AT&T and an investigation is underway. AT&T
may have to take down the hotline outside of the time that HSU uses it for
the medium-range call. HSU agreed that this would be ok during the next
several days, but requested that AT&T call HSU daily to make sure that this
is the case. Contact phone number for AT&T: 1-888-857-8823, ticket number:
680800944.

2. The East-Pacific ATCF workstation (pac-atcf.nhc.noaa.gov) was making a
noise at the end of the early Saturday morning (August 6th) shift that
sounded like a hard drive issue. Nothing abnormal was heard after this
shift.
Other items:

NHC RFCs:
1. RFC #188 - recon_timeseries_gnu.pl v1.1.0 - Migrate the Perl script that
plots time series of recon obs data from Mike Brennan's 'pinfish'
workstation to operational, redundant compute servers. This transition will
facilitate troubleshooting and make the generation of these intranet time
series datasets (.png, .dat) more robust/less prone to outages. To be
implemented on Monday, August 8 at 1500Z.

2. RFC #189 - Migrate csh scripts that generate animated GIF images of
GFS/ECMWF/UKMet model fields from Mike Brennan's 'pinfish' workstation to
operational, redundant compute servers. This transition will facilitate
troubleshooting and make the generation of these looping GIFs more
robust/less prone to outages. To be implemented on Monday, August 8 at
1500Z.

3. RFC #190 - nhc_awips.sh v1.0.2 - CPHC is now using mixed case in their
TCP (Tropical Cyclone Public advisory) products for this year and no longer
need to pre-process the TCP before transmission from the ATCF into AWIPS.
This RFC is removing calls to their pre-processing code upon transmission.
To be implemented on Wednesday, August 10 at 1200Z.

4. RFC #2193 - ecFlow v3.1.9 - Repurpose 2 service nodes on the Luna and
Surge supercomputers (total of 4) for development ecFlow servers. EcFlow is
the job scheduler used by the NCEP Production Job Suite. Developer use on
the backup WCOSS system will help streamline R2O. To be implemented on
Thursday, August 11 at 1800Z.
