NOAA/NOS nowCOAST Status Message
11:25 AM EDT Tuesday, August 1, 2023

Late yesterday afternoon, nowCOAST Version 6.1.0 was released to the
public.

* nowCOAST Version 6.1.0:*

*nowCOAST Service Changes:*

   - Added time-enabled Web Map Service (OGC protocol) for the NASA
Short-term Prediction Research and Transition Center (SPoRT) experimental
North American Sea Surface Temperature (SST) Composite Analysis

   https://nowcoast.noaa.gov/geoserver/analysis/sea_surface_temperature/ows?SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.3.0&REQUEST=GetCapabilities

Background Information:
The NASA SPoRT Surface Temperature (SST) Composite is a blend of the
following data and analyses: 1) NASA high-resolution Moderate Resolution
Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), 2) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer
Suite (VIIRS), 3) the NOAA/NESDIS daily global blended GOES/POES Sea
Surface Temperature Analysis, and 4) the United Kingdom Met Office daily
global Operational Sea Surface Temperature and Ice Analysis (OSTIA).
However, for inland lakes the GOES/POES SST analysis is not available. The
SPoRT compositing algorithm uses the most recent seven-day collection of
MODIS and VIIRS data and the most recent daily NESDIS GOES/POES SST
Analysis and OSTIA. The data and analyses are weighted according to data
latency and spatial resolution. The composite is calculated on a Northern
Hemisphere 2-km (1.1 nautical miles) grid up to 80 degrees N. The composite
is generated twice daily and valid for the periods 0000-1159 UTC and
1200-2359 UTC. The nowCOAST viewer displays the composites for the previous
four days.

*nowCOAST Map Viewer Changes:*

   - Alphabetized Layers list in the map viewer menu
   - Users can now select menu titles to expand layer options
   - Added the SST service to the menu in additional layers

The nowCOAST map viewer allows users to pan and zoom on the SST composite
map and to obtain the SST in both degrees F and degrees C by selecting a
location with a click or touch. An example of obtaining the SST off Cape
Hatteras is shown below.

The SPoRT SST composite has been available on nowCOAST for many years, but
unfortunately it was not available on nowCOAST @ AWS when the redirect from
NWS/NCO IDP Data Centers to AWS occurred on April 19th. The SST composite
is available once again on nowCOAST.
