NOAA/NOS nowCOAST Status Message
4:50 PM EDT Thursday, April 28, 2016
A new version of nowCOAST was implemented this afternoon. The most
significant changes are 1) the replacement of the RIDGEII weather radar
base reflectivity with the NWS Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor (MRMS) System's
quality controlled weather radar base reflectivity and 2) the addition
of NOAA's Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) as a new map overlay on
the nowCOAST map viewer.
The MRMS QC base reflectivity has a higher horizontal resolution (1 km
[0.62 mile]) and is updated more frequently (4 minutes) on nowCOAST.
Users will also notice less clutter in the base reflectivity mosaic.
MRMS was developed by the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory
(NSSL) and is operated by NCO in the NOAA IDP Infrastructure.
The NOAA ENC map overlay provides a second type of nautical chart to
overlay different nowCOAST data layers on. The ENC map overlays are
made available on nowCOAST by connecting to the ENC map service which
supports NOAA ENC Online Viewer operated by NOS Office of Coast Survey.
Users can seamlessly zoom from the high level of detail of the large
scale ENCs to small-scale ENC overviews. This new overlay can be found
by clicking on the Map Overlays button near the top of the map viewer.
(The ENCs shown on nowCOAST are not certified for navigation.)
The nowCOAST Team extends our appreciation to NCO personnel for
implementing nowCOAST Ver. 5.0.3 in the NOAA IDP infrastructure today.
