NWS National Map Viewer (“the Viewer”) web application framework hosted on
the Amazon Web Services public cloud became an operational service
September 28, 2022. On August 17, 2023, the Viewer was updated with bug
fixes and some enhancements.

Summary

   -

   Added advanced controls and displays for near real-time weather
   observation data.
   -

   Addressed various defects and added enhancements to existing tools,
   including:
   -

      Draw Tool;
      -

      ID Tool and View Data Table;
      -

      Query Tool exports;
      -

      Tile Cache zoom;
      -

      Improved raster data uploads;
      -

      Time enabled settings; and
      -

      Bookmarks.
      -

   Documentations have been updated with the new tools and enhancements.
   -

   Dashboard defect fixed where clicking on a dashboard takes the user to
   Viewer webpage.
   -

   Updated legends for WWA layers to display only active event types (i.e.,
   introduced dynamic legends).
   -

   Updated and fixed bugs with page layout and icons used for map controls.
   -

   Updated and fixed bugs with pop-up mouse-over feature.
   -

   Addressed backwards compatibility issues for the data Application
   Programming Interface (API) package for external partners to import data.
   -

   The Print Tool has been incorporated back into the Viewer application.
   It contains an updated User Interface (UI). User has the ability to move
   positions and order of the legend within the preview window.
   -

   Removed all codes and references to the old UI classic. All the forms in
   the Admin tool have been migrated to the new UI code.
   -

   Addressed various defects and added enhancements to external service
   feeds such as the Foreign Data Wrappers (FDW) Open Source Library Reader,
   ESRI proxy tokens service feeds and created a link to attached photos in an
   ESRI server. Also addressed the issue with highlighting a feature on a map
   when a record is selected on the ID Tool table window.
   -

   The user account management and admin has been improved. Enhancements
   and defects have been addressed. A new workflow for tracking and
   denying/rejecting account requests.
   -

   Added support for new layer type for Mapbox Vector Style / Mapbox Vector
   Tile (MVS/MVT). Made changes to make sure the new layer type is compatible
   with the other tools within the Viewer application (i.e., Print,
   Import/Export Package, Legend, symbology, etc). It has the ability to
   ingest an internal .json file or an external service feed. This update
   allows us to update the Environmental Systems Research Institute™ (ESRI)
   background layers and includes data sources and attribution.

The NWS National Viewer is a web-based Geographic Information System (GIS)
tool that assists NWS users/stakeholders including a diverse group of
organizations and individuals who use NWS data in a wide variety of ways.
As NWS data increases in scope and frequency, providing methods to ensure
these data are easily accessible and ingestible by NWS users is paramount.

Interactive, web-based geospatial products, including geospatial services
and map viewers, are universal methods to serve many of these assimilation
needs. Interactive maps driven by geospatial services can serve all data
from rapidly updating products (e.g., Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor [MRMS] data)
to more traditional products (i.e., precipitation forecasts and
event-driven watches and warnings). The NWS has developed the Viewer based
on the aforementioned functional and data requirements provided by NWS
Staff based on feedback from their stakeholders.

The Viewer is the result of a NWS partnered effort with NOAA’s National
Ocean Service (NOS) to leverage the Environment Response Management
Application (ERMA) software and customize it to meet NWS’ initial
functional requirements. The first two operational GIS program sites for
the Viewer are for General Weather topics and Water-related information:

General Site URL: https://viewer.weather.noaa.gov/general

Water Site URL: https://viewer.weather.noaa.gov/water

The following GIS program sites will remain experimental at this time:

Tropical URL: https://viewer.weather.noaa.gov/tropical

Fire URL: https://viewer.weather.noaa.gov/fire

Severe URL: https://viewer.weather.noaa.gov/severe
<https://viewer.weather.noaa.gov/severe>

Winter URL: https://viewer.weather.noaa.gov/winter

Space URL: https://viewer.weather.noaa.gov/space

Climate URL: https://viewer.weather.noaa.gov/climate

Aviation URL: https://viewer.weather.noaa.gov/aviation

Marine URL: https://viewer.weather.noaa.gov/marine

Technical functionality and the “look and feel” are consistent across all
the Viewer program sites. Therefore all sites, operational and experimental
will receive the updates described above. Each program site is designed to
feature data most relevant to the type of weather, water, and/or climate
focus areas represented by the program site. You can also access program
sites from the Change Site icon on the main toolbar.
