[Ncep.list.fv3-announce] Update: FV3GFS/global-workflow port to Hera

All,

Good progress continues to be made on the port of the FV3GFS to Hera. Most
components are working stably now and the remaining pieces (e.g.
verification) are now being tested. I am also now beginning to engage with
beta-testers to confirm they can reproduce what I am able to build/run.
There are many pieces of the system that need to get into their final forms
still (a.k.a. validated and tagged) so we're still at least a couple weeks
away from a finalized system. We have to cross our Ts and dot our Is before
giving you all a package to run on Hera.

Given the current status I estimate an official tagged and merged version
in global-workflow by mid to late October. I'm working to have a branch
version for folks to use in early October, with the understanding that
changes will likely still occur during final pre-commit testing phase. Stay
tuned for that!

*Some other good news...word on the street is that the schedule for Theia
end-of-life has been extended into late October, maybe even late November!* I'm
waiting for system admins to send an announcement about this to confirm
what I was told yesterday. If you have experiments running on Theia that
will complete in the next few weeks I recommend trying to finish them
there. Even though end-of-life has been extended for Theia the filesystem
support will still go away October 1st so keep that in mind...if there are
filesystem issues there is no help. *Hera has now passed acceptance tests
and is considered operational, although it's still at 50% while Theia is
still available.*

*One important thing to keep in mind for those considering moving
incomplete experiments from Theia to Hera...the version of the FV3GFS
components being tested on Hera are off of the respective component
master/develop branches. *This means that when updates for Hera come back
to global-workflow it will be more advanced that GFSv15 and the develop
branch will no longer reproduce current operations. Please take a look at
the component versions you are using in your experiments on Theia and see
if you can move to the latest versions (sync merge with the master/develop
to get build updates when available) or if you will need build patches for
your older versions. This check will be most critical for the DA and
forecast parts of the FV3GFS.

Thanks all, we're getting close to the end of this port! Thank you to
everyone involved in the port!
