The weekly PowerPoint presentations summarizing the recent variability of
the global monsoon systems have been updated on the CPC Global Monsoons
website:
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Global_Monsoons/Global-Monsoon.shtml

*HIGHLIGHTS:*

*African Monsoons:*

Weekly rainfall totals exceeded 100mm over eastern Guinea-Conakry, Sierra
Leone, parts of Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire, and local area in Gabon.

Below-average rainfall was observed across western Senegal and
Guinea-Bissau, many parts of Nigeria, Cameroon, southern CAR and parts of
South Sudan.

Week-1 outlooks call for an increased chance for above-average rainfall
over much of Guinea-Conakry, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire and
Ghana. In contrast there is an increased chance for below-average rainfall
across northern Angola and southwestern DRC, and northern Uganda and
southern South Sudan.

*Asian-Australian Monsoons:*

For the past 90 days, a small pockets of below normal rainfall deficits
remain over central eastern China, South Koreas, central Japan, large
areas of central and southern peninsular India, southeastern Australia,
and Papua New Guinea. Elsewhere, the rainfall amounts received were at
normal to slightly above normal levels, particularly along the Western
Ghats, Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, and Vietnam. For
the past 30 days, rainfall deficits are noted across large parts of
southern and western India, in large parts of eastern central and eastern
China, Thailand, large parts of Indonesian islands and Malaysia. Elsewhere
rainfall received was at normal to above normal levels.

In this past week, rainfall amounts are generally below normal everywhere
in the region, large deficits occurred over southern/peninsular and central
India and most of Indonesia. According to the India Met. Dept, since the
first of June till today, All India Rainfall has been has been 9 %
deficient. In the upcoming two weeks, the NCEP GFS model forecasts below
normal rainfall over much of central India, more rainfall over central and
eastern China in the first week, more rainfall over northern India in the
second week, and a more general sign of rainfall retreat as the summer
monsoon is coming to a close.

*South American Monsoons:*

Long-term rainfall deficits are present over the Amazon Basin, the
Brazilian Plateau and the extreme southern Brazil.

During the last 7 days, below-average precipitation was observed over
portions of eastern Venezuela, northern Peru, northwestern and southern
Brazil, Uruguay and southern Chile. Above-average precipitation was
observed over portions of northern Brazil, Colombia and western Venezuela.

For Days 1-7 (17 – 23 September 2018), below-average precipitation is
predicted for portions of western Colombia, southern Venezuela, western and
west-central Brazil. Above-average precipitation is predicted for portions
of southern Brazil, Uruguay and southern Chile.
