The weekly PowerPoint presentations summarizing the recent variability of
the global monsoon systems have been updated on the CPC Global Monsoons
website:
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Global_Monsoons/Global-Monsoon.shtml
*HIGHLIGHTS:*
*African Monsoons:*
Rainfall was above-average across Cameroon, CAR, Congo-Brazzaville, DRC,
parts of Zambia and Madagascar.
Below-average-rainfall was observed over much of Gabon and Angola, Uganda,
Tanzania, Kenya and southern Somalia.
Week-1 outlooks call for an increased chance for below-average rainfall
over Equatorial-Guinea, Gabon, Congo-Brazzaville, northwestern DRC, eastern
Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, northeastern South Africa and southern
Mozambique. In contrast, there is an increased chance for above-average
rainfall over portions of Angola, southern DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, western
Tanzania, and northern Zambia.
*Asian-Australian Monsoons:*
For the past 90 days, below normal rainfall deficits remain in general over
east central India, South Koreas, coastal southeastern China, Papua New
Guinea, Cambodia, Malaysia, and parts of central and south eastern
Australia. Elsewhere the monsoon rainfall is at normal to above normal
levels. For the past 30 days, below normal rainfall deficits are visibly
noted over southeastern peninsular India, parts of interior eastern China,
Malaysia and Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, and
parts of eastern Australia.
In this past week, the observed rainfall amounts have been below normal
rainfall over deep southern peninsular India, Malaysia, and part of
Indonesia and the Philippines. The 2017 winter northeast monsoon over
southern India (Oct-Dec) rainfall, according to the India Meteorological
Dept. (IMD), is at -9% level from the 1st of October till date. In the
upcoming two weeks, the NCEP GFS model predicts continued below normal
rainfall over southern peninsular India in the first week, and over
Thailand and Cambodia in the second week.
*South American Monsoons:*
Long-term rainfall deficits are present over the Amazon Basin and Brazilian
Plateau.
During the last 7 days, below-average precipitation was observed over
portions of northern and southern Brazil, northern Bolivia and northern
Argentina. Above-average precipitation was observed over portions of
central Brazil and central Peru.
For Days 1-7 (20-26 Nov 2017), below-average precipitation is predicted
over portions of northern and central South America, Paraguay, southern
Chile and northern Argentina. Above-average precipitation is predicted for
portions of central Peru, Bolivia and southern Brazil.
